Finca Valpiedra is one of the Rioja wineries that is currently making the most interesting wines. Founded in 1999 by the Martínez Bujanda family, it is part of the association "Grandes Pagos de España", an exclusive and small group of wineries distributed throughout the country that, with unique vineyards and their own personality, claim the authentic terroirs of the country.
Located in the town of Fuenmayor, in the heart of La Rioja Alta, its vineyards are on the banks of the river Ebro, in the meanders that it forms as it passes through Fuenmayor and Cenicero. The winery represents the classic Bordeaux model of the great chateaux, a single estate and 4 wines made with grapes from that vineyard: Finca Valpiedra, its most representative wine, Cantos de Valpiedra, Petra de Valpiedra, a single varietal Garnacha in the purest style of the old classics of La Rioja and Finca Valpiedra Reserva Blanco, a rarity of the winery, which is made from a micro-plot of 0.2 hectares.
The stony soils are one of the differentiating features of Finca Valpiedra that clearly influence the quality of the grapes, hence they form part of the winery's name and label design.
In addition to this unique soil, this special terroir is defined by a very particular microclimate influenced by the Sierra Cantabria mountain range to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda to the south. A climate somewhere between Atlantic and Mediterranean, which stimulates the production of polyphenols, which helps to produce powerful and long-lived wines. In addition, the proximity to the Ebro River protects the vineyard from dehydration in extremely hot weather and from frost in the harsh winter.
Manual harvests and a rigorous selection of clusters both in the vineyard and in the winery are a fundamental part of the winery's quality criteria. The ageing of all its wines in new French and American oak barrels is also a hallmark of the winery, which helps to define the elegant and long-lived profile of its wines, always in the background, giving prominence to the varietal aromas of the grapes themselves.
