Cement, stone and wood, that's the essence of Amaren
Bodegas Amaren was born in honour of Ángeles, wife of Luis Cañas and mother of Juan Luis (Bodegas Luis Cañas, Rioja Alavesa).
In 1995, Juan Luis Cañas was thinking of making a different wine, a wine that would express the personality of the grape variety to the maximum. A 100% Tempranillo wine from several plots of old vines. At that time, his mother Ángeles passed away and that is when he decided to dedicate his creation to her: Amaren Reserva Tempranillo 1995. This is where it all came from, because Amaren in Basque means "from the mother". The creation of this winery is a tribute to Ángeles, who was a fundamental pillar in the creation and development of Bodegas Luis Cañas.
At Bodegas Amaren, the countryside is a way of life. They are true experts in working the vineyard, and the plots are the pieces of the perfect puzzle.
The winery is located in Samaniego (Rioja Alavesa), and is surrounded by 65 hectares of vineyards between 35 and 110 years old. The vineyards are small in size and are characterised by being located on clayey-calcareous soils of low fertility. With a unique microclimate, the vineyard honours the winemaking tradition of the region by offering low yields, small clusters and grapes of excellent quality.
Given the characteristics of the vineyard, all the work is done by hand and, in some cases, with animal traction. The aim is to care for the land in the most natural way possible, following the guidelines of rational viticulture, in order to preserve the great diversity of animal and plant species that populate each plot.
