Alonso & Pedrajo

Specialists in Rioja wines

Alonso & Pedrajo is the result of a close and long-standing friendship between two families who encouraged each other to embark together on the dream of making their own wine.

They moved from theory to practice in 2011. They located the land and, in October 2013, they undertook their first harvests. They have now directed all their resources into acquiring vineyards as the main focus of the project, hoping in the near future to start building their own winery.

The vineyards are located in Finca La Cala, in Villalba de Rioja, at the eastern end of the Obaranes Mountains. Villaba is characterised by being an area of marked transition between the climates that make up its surroundings, mainly Continental climate, but at the same time with an important Atlantic influence. Its diversity of clay-limestone soils gives it a unique typicity. Villalba is a unique enclave, very special even within La Rioja, as its grapes have always been highly valued in the wineries of Haro. Currently only 3 wineries market wines from the municipality.

Fifty percent of the grapes used in their winemaking come from their own vineyards. The other half is purchased from local winegrowers. They practice responsible viticulture, with exhaustive care of the vineyards. Minimal intervention on soils and vines. All their wines are aged for at least 6 months on lees from yeasts that made the wines ferment spontaneously. Once bottled, the wines spend no less than 3 months in the cellar for the natural wines and at least 12 months for the rest. The wines are aged in barrels, earthenware jars or concrete tanks, waiting for them to stabilise naturally with the passing of the seasons.

Their wines are not created from the cellar. For them, the best oenologist is the one who intervenes the least, the one who respects and understands the nature of the grapes with which they make their wines. The challenge of Alonso & Pedrajo is to transfer the singular origin of their vineyards to each glass.
